Reading the sky

UNDERSTANDING THE FORECAST

Seeing the Northern Lights
in Finnish Lapland.

Levi and Ylläs lie near 67° north, within the auroral oval. Their latitude makes Lapland a strong viewing location: with clear skies and suitable solar activity, aurora may be visible on several nights during a stay.

Charged particles from the Sun interact with gases in the upper atmosphere to create the display. Green is usually oxygen at around 100 km altitude; higher-altitude oxygen can glow red, while nitrogen contributes blue and purple. An appearance may last minutes or continue for hours.

Look for darkness, a clear sky and geomagnetic activity together. Kp 2–3 can be enough in Lapland; Kp 5 and above can bring strong overhead displays. The dashboard combines the Kp index, local R-index magnetometers, cloud information and solar-wind readings from the DSCOVR feed.

The equinox periods, especially September–October and February–March, are often productive. December and January bring long nights, although clouds can interrupt the view. Choose a dark location away from village lighting; Kettura’s cabins offer a way to keep watch close to your accommodation.

PLAN AROUND THE LIGHT

Aurora Calendar

Lapland’s natural viewing season extends from late August into early April, with activity often peaking around the September and March equinoxes. Levi and Ylläs sit inside the auroral zone; a clear sky, a dark location and Kp around 3 or above are useful signs. Check the live readings as conditions change. Kettura Tours operates from 01 December 2026 to 31 March 2027.
